1855年創設者岡島卯三郎は染色加工を修めました。彼の長男で二代目の岡島重助は呉服の裏地の染色加工を専門に営み、その優れた技術力で高い評価を得、その時代、京都の友禅業界に名を轟かせました。その後戦争により事業は一時中断されましたが、戦後すぐに国の技術保存工場として発信し、三代目は第一回京都府産業功労者賞を受賞しております。 その長男、現社長の岡島重雄は、友禅染めを格段に高い視点でとらえ、小紋や更紗柄の提案を中心に、老舗として高級呉服をさらに発展させる一方、呉服のみならずファッションアクセサリーの製作など、様々な分野に取り組んでいます。
